Being Prepared Here and Now- Are You Ready?

Here in Maryland we experienced an earthquake AND a hurricane in ONE WEEK! So, being and getting prepared is no joke. All is changing. ALL will be challenging to each of us. If you are ready, they you can help your neighbor. That is what “community” is all about!

As I get additional information on ways to protect ourselves, I will add to this page. If YOU have any info to share, please Contact Me!

Should you think this is just paranoia, check out the government’s disaster information site,

Radiation Protection
by Dr. William Pawluk, MD, MSC

I wish I could say that a lot of the hype about the Japanese radiation fallout is a bit like Chicken Little. The reality is there will be some radiation exposure. The problem is the degree. The experts believe the West Coast of the US is likely to get very little exposure given the distance the radiation plume has to travel. So far, the level of radiation is mostly a local event in Japan. We all need to remember that we are constantly bombarded and surrounded by various types of radiation daily. At this point, unless the radiation exposure becomes massive, the US is not likely to experience anything like 3 Mile Island or Chernobyl from Japan.

Should we panic? No. Should we be protecting ourselves? Yes. Should we were protecting ourselves any differently than we usually do? No. The logical reduction therefore is that we should be doing what we normally do to protect ourselves. I recommend daily iodine/iodide anyway. As I have tested many people for iodine deficiency, I found that virtually everybody is iodine deficient mostly to a significant degree. As a result, we should all be taking some amount of iodine daily. The doctors will tell you that this is dangerous because of the possibility of allergy responses [rare] or “causing” Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves’ disease. In this latter situation, iodine simply

provides fuel to an engine that is already hyper stimulated. Therefore, the iodine simply unmasks what is already there and makes it more apparent. There are doctors who specialize in iodine supplementation who believe that ultimately iodine supplementation will help to resolve the autoimmune thyroiditis problems. So, fundamentally, iodine should not be an issue for anybody. If somebody is concerned about the possibility of thyroiditis/Graves’ disease, they should have their thyroid antibodies checked before starting on iodine. If the antibodies are high then iodine use should be proceeded with caution, but still not contraindicated.

Back to the question of radiation fallout. We must not forget that the iodine issue is simply one of many radioisotopes produced by nuclear fallout. We have cesium, rubidium, strontium and others that can be toxic as well. If we think about the concept of hormesis, we are being constantly exposed to small levels of exposure of radiation elements from the environment on a daily basis. With hormesis we are in a sense immunizing ourselves against environmental exposure, by keeping our detox processes continually active. On the other hand, hormesis may activate processes in the body that are not only detoxifying, but also in the wrong circumstances, in vulnerable individuals, damaging on a long-term basis. So, just focusing on iodine is myopic at the least and dangerous at the worst. We really should be taking a more broad-spectrum perspective on environmental/radiation protection.

By way of analogy, as with protecting ourselves against influenza viruses, we really should be following a daily routine of general health enhancement. Since there are many flu viruses, immunizing against one virus without a daily routine of general health enhancement is no better than an ostrich approach. Your butt is likely to be whacked by many other flu-like viruses before you ever get whacked by influenza. So, self protection against radiation fallout is a never-ending process and follows the rules of daily general health enhancement/maintenance.

Having a diet with plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, between 5 to 10 servings per day, and plenty of fiber will probably help more for general health in a fallout environment, than simply looking for a magic bullet in iodine replacement. Add to this, getting a good supply of water per day is a major detoxifier. Needless to say, adding other supplements that enhance health, specifically for detoxification, will be even more beneficial. These may include a broad spectrum organic multivitamin (containing other minerals), omega-3 fatty acids, adequate levels of vitamin D3, between 2000 to 8000 mg per day of vitamin C, MSM [for its sulfur content], N-acetylcysteine 600 to 1200 mg twice a day to enhance detoxifying glutathione levels in the body, among others. Obviously stress management, adequate sleep, anxiety reduction, fear elimination, adequate exercise/activity [10,000 steps per day], reduction of intake of omega six fatty acids, elimination of trans fatty acids and oxidized fats, all will help to mitigate any negative effects of other things that are happening in the body. Many people are now recommending the use of zeolite for daily detoxification. It is becoming more generally accepted that detoxification through the use of IV chelation is not only a waste of money but does not take care of the need for daily detoxification.

Back to iodine. Remember that the iodine you take is only going to protect you basically for a very short period of time, 1 to 3 days at the most. The thyroid gland will use up the iodine that you give it very rapidly. So, if you only use it for 1 to 2 days, that’s all the protection you will get. Back to my earlier point, we should be using iodine probably, most of us, daily anyway, not only to protect us from any radioactive iodine in the atmosphere, but also from the general lack of iodine in our diets. Iodine is used  not only by the thyroid gland, but also for breast protection, prostate protection and cardiovascular health. There are many other uses of iodine in the body, other than for protecting/supporting the thyroid. That’s why I recommend daily supplementation, preferably the iodine/iodide form with at least 5-12.5 mg/day.
